The brief

Modern furniture for a protected heritage campus

Founded in 1935, The Doon School's Dehradun campus is one of India's most recognisable heritage school buildings — colonial-era architecture, arched windows and wood-panelled interiors that the school was determined to preserve.

The brief was to replace ageing classroom furniture with pieces that were more durable and ergonomic for daily boarding-school use, without clashing with the character of the rooms they sat in.

What they needed

  • Wood-tone desks and chairs that read naturally against heritage interiors
  • Sturdy, boarding-school-grade construction for years of daily use
  • Comfortable, ergonomic seating for long classroom hours
  • Installation that respected working hours and protected heritage fittings
The solution

Custom finishes that honour the building's character

Popcorn Furniture designed a wood-finish tablet-arm desk and chair range, matched in tone to the classrooms' existing wood trim, and manufactured in-house to BIS standards for long-term institutional durability. Installation was scheduled room by room, working carefully around the campus's heritage status.

Spaces we furnished

  • Heritage classrooms — wood-finish tablet-arm desks & chairs
  • Lecture & assembly rooms — durable, easily rearranged seating
  • Boarding house study areas — study desks and storage
  • Staff & admin rooms — workstations and storage

Popcorn understood that we couldn't just modernise our classrooms — the furniture had to belong in rooms that are almost ninety years old. They got the balance exactly right.
